بِسْمِ اللَّهِ وَعَلَى بَرَكَةِ اللَّهِ
Dua Before Eating – Transliteration In Arabic:
Bismillahi wa ‘ala barakatillah
Dua Before Eating – Translation In English
In the name of Allah and with the blessings of Allah.
Explanation
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught his followers to begin every act, especially eating, with the remembrance of Allah by saying “Bismillah.” This simple dua helps develop mindfulness, gratitude, and humility before partaking in Allah’s provisions.
It reminds us that food is not merely a physical necessity but also a blessing (barakah), a source of spiritual nourishment when consumed with thankfulness and moderation. Teaching this dua to children instills in them the habit of recognizing Allah as the ultimate Provider.
Incident from Sunnah
It is narrated that the Prophet ﷺ once noticed a young boy eating without mentioning Allah’s name and taking bites hastily. The Prophet ﷺ gently advised him:
“O young boy, say Bismillah, eat with your right hand, and eat from what is in front of you.”
(Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith 5376)
This Hadith highlights the Prophetic etiquette of eating (Adab al-Akl). Beginning with the name of Allah, eating with the right hand, and showing discipline at the table.
