Dua of Musa (A.S.) for Speech

رَبِّ إِنِّي لِمَا أَنزَلْتَ إِلَيَّ مِنْ خَيْرٍ فَقِيرٌ

Transliteration:

Rabbi innī limā anzalta ilayya min khayrin faqīr

Translation:

My Lord, indeed I am in desperate need of whatever good You send down to me.

Story Behind Dua of Musa

This powerful du‘a was uttered by Prophet Musa (A.S.) at one of the most vulnerable moments of his life, a moment marked by exhaustion, fear, loneliness, and complete dependence on Allah.

Musa (A.S.) had just fled Egypt after unintentionally killing a man while defending an oppressed Israelite. With Pharaoh and his forces now seeking his life, Musa (A.S.) escaped with nothing, no wealth, no provisions, no companion, and no destination except Allah.

After days of travel, hungry and exhausted, Musa (A.S.) arrived at the wells of Madyan. There, he noticed two young women standing aside, unable to water their flock because the stronger shepherds had crowded the well. Despite his own weakness and hunger, Musa (A.S.) stepped forward, helped them water their animals, and then withdrew to the shade, utterly drained.

It was there, sitting alone beneath the shade, that Musa (A.S.) turned to Allah. He did not demand it. He did not specify what he wanted. He simply acknowledged his complete dependence on Allah’s mercy and provision, saying:

“My Lord, indeed I am in desperate need of whatever good You send down to me.”
(Surah Al-Qasas 28:24)

This du‘a was not merely about food or shelter. It was the cry of a servant who had nothing left but faith. It was an admission of weakness, humility, and trust, a declaration that all goodness comes only from Allah.

Allah responded immediately. Soon after, one of the women returned, inviting Musa (A.S.) to meet her father. That meeting became the turning point of his life: Musa (A.S.) was given shelter, employment, marriage, and stability, all as a result of a single sincere du‘a made from the heart.

Why This Dua of Speech Is Important?

This du‘a teaches us the beauty of asking Allah without entitlement and without conditions. Musa (A.S.) did not list his needs, yet Allah fulfilled them in ways far beyond expectation.

This du‘a is especially powerful when:

  • You feel financially strained or uncertain
  • You are starting over in life
  • You feel alone, displaced, or unsupported
  • You need relief but don’t know how to ask

By admitting our dependence on Allah, we invite His generosity. This du‘a reminds us that Allah responds not to eloquence, but to sincerity. When made with humility, it becomes a gateway to provision, stability, and unseen blessings.

Incident from the Sunnah

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ emphasized the virtue of humility in supplication and reliance upon Allah, teaching that sincere need draws divine help.

The Prophet ﷺ said:

“Allah is Gentle and loves gentleness in all matters.”
(Bukhari & Muslim)

The du‘a of Musa (A.S.) exemplifies this gentleness, no desperation, no complaint, only trust. Scholars have often cited this du‘a as a model for asking Allah for provision with humility and dignity, reinforcing the Prophetic teaching that Allah responds to those who rely upon Him completely.
