Dua Before Sleeping

اللّٰهُمَّ بِاسْمِكَ أَمُوتُ وَأَحْيَا

Transliteration:

Allahumma bismika amootu wa ahya

Translation:

O Allah! I die and live calling Your name.

Dua Before Sleeping – Explanation:

This short but meaningful dua reminds us that sleep is like a minor death, a temporary pause in our worldly awareness. By reciting this supplication, a believer places their soul in Allah’s care, trusting Him for protection through the night and for life upon waking.

It teaches faith, surrender, and mindfulness, encouraging Muslims to end their day with remembrance (zikr) and gratitude. This act turns a daily routine into a moment of devotion, strengthening one’s relationship with Allah.

It is also Sunnah to perform wudu (ablution) before sleeping, lie on the right side, and recite Ayat al-Kursi and the three Quls (Surah Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq, An-Nas) for protection.

Incident from Sunnah:

It is narrated that the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ would recite this dua each night before sleeping:

“When the Prophet ﷺ lay down to sleep, he would say: Allahumma bismika amootu wa ahya.
(Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith 6314)

This practice reflects the Prophet’s ﷺ constant remembrance of Allah, trusting Him fully at the end of each day, and beginning every new morning with renewed gratitude.
