Dua for Opening Fast

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي لَكَ صُمْتُ، وَبِكَ آمَنْتُ، وَعَلَيْكَ تَوَكَّلْتُ، وَعَلَى رِزْقِكَ أَفْطَرْتُ

Transliteration:

Allahumma inni laka sumtu, wa bika aamantu, wa ‘alayka tawakkaltu, wa ‘ala rizqika-aftartu

Translation:

O Allah! I fasted for You, I believe in You, I put my trust in You, and with Your provision, I break my fast.

Dua for Opening Fast – Explanation:

This dua is a heartfelt expression of gratitude and devotion at the moment of iftar – the most spiritually fulfilling time of the fasting day. It acknowledges that fasting was done purely for Allah’s sake and that even the food used to break the fast is a blessing granted by Him.

By reciting this dua, a believer reaffirms faith (iman), trust (tawakkul), and gratitude (shukr), three core pillars of Islamic spirituality. It transforms a simple act of eating into a moment of deep connection with Allah and awareness of His mercy.

Incident from Sunnah:

It is narrated that when the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ broke his fast, he would say:

“The thirst is gone, the veins are moistened, and the reward is assured, if Allah wills.”
(Sunan Abu Dawood, Hadith 2357)

This shows how the Prophet ﷺ combined thankfulness and hope at the time of iftar, recognizing relief from thirst and hunger while remaining humble and hopeful for Allah’s acceptance.

He also encouraged believers to hasten to break the fast as soon as the sun sets and to begin with fresh dates, dry dates, or water, demonstrating simplicity and mindfulness.
